Social Science at Olivet College

The Social Science Department has the flexibility to accommodate students with varied career interests, preparing you for non-profit or public service positions, and graduate school as well.

All students within the Social Science Department complete an internship as part of their academic experience with top organizations, such as local government branches and departments, schools, social service agencies and more. Many of our students find full-time careers with these organizations after graduation.

Our social science majors are also encouraged to travel out-of-state and abroad as part of their experience. Past travel experiences have included study in Ireland, Greece, Rome, England, India, Japan and Ghana as well as in Maine, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Washington, D.C.

As part of the curriculum, you’ll have opportunities to pursue independent research. Exploring your field of study through research allows you to gain hands-on experience, work with our outstanding faculty, prepare for graduate school or get a head start on your career.

Kaelin CrossIn fall of 2013, sophomore Kaelin Cross made a decision to transfer schools.

She was worried about her future. Transitioning to Olivet College from Michigan State University (MSU) seemed daunting. But Cross, a sociology and anthropology major, chose Olivet because of its small size, family feel and its professors.

Erin Sweeney

Erin Sweeney is a senior on track to graduate in the spring of 2015 with a degree in criminal justice and a minor in psychology. Erin chose Olivet College after attending a campus visit during spring break of her senior year in high school.

“When I came to campus, it actually felt like home. The admissions reps explained how the professors really get to know you through a one-on-one interaction. I really liked that.”

Helen Macqueen

Helen Macqueen, an Olivet College senior majoring in sociology/anthropology with a history minor, pursued two independent studies this spring with Cynthia Noyes, associate professor of sociology/anthropology. Her classes were titled, Museums: Issues and Exhibits, and Museums: Problems and Possibilities. She and Noyes met once a week to cover material for both of the courses.

“While the majority of students who declare a social science major want to work in the helping professions, some are interested in different aspects of society and culture,” Noyes said. “These students are usually very motivated, good students, who want to pursue some particular line of research, like Helen.”

Meet Kaitlin Greathouse - When Kaitlin Greathouse learned she was accepted into the University of Edinburgh’s School of Social and Political Science, she’s pretty sure she screamed. Considering it’s one of the top three programs in the world for English speakers to learn Arabic and its politics, who could blame her?
