Sociology and Anthropology Major

The combined program in sociology and anthropology provides service learning and career preparation opportunities for students interested and committed to promoting understanding and positive change in society. You’ll receive a solid grounding in social theory in your first year. You’ll then apply these concepts in thematic courses, practicums and research experiences. In addition, you are exposed to issues in cultural pluralism and diversity through coursework in gender, ethnicity, social class, and in at least one course with a transnational focus.

The sociology and anthropology program emphasizes preparation for careers and graduate training in basic and applied social science fields such as social work, community relations, alternative dispute resolution, criminal justice, education, international relations and service, human resources and advocacy, as well as research and teaching.

As a sociology and anthropology major at Olivet College, you are strongly encouraged to pursue at least four semesters of a foreign language in addition to your major studies.

The following is an overview of courses associated with our sociology and anthropology major. We encourage you to speak with a faculty representative during your on-campus visit for detailed information about your specific program interests.
